Bloomsbury Young Readers – How to Choose the Right Reading Level for Your Child

Teaching a child to read is a wonderful milestone. Helping them fall in love with reading is an even greater achievement.

When it comes to children's books in English, choosing the right reading level is just as important as choosing the right story. A book that's too difficult can quickly discourage a young reader, while one that's too easy may not hold their interest for long.

That's exactly why Bloomsbury Young Readers was created—to help children develop their reading skills step by step through engaging, age-appropriate stories that build both confidence and a genuine love of books.

Rather than offering books at a single level, the series is carefully organised into progressive reading stages, allowing every child to move forward at their own pace.

What is Bloomsbury Young Readers?

Bloomsbury Young Readers is a series of beautifully illustrated books for emerging readers, published by the renowned British publisher Bloomsbury—best known around the world as the original publisher of the Harry Potter series.

These are not English textbooks.

They are real children's books, written by talented authors and filled with memorable characters, humour and exciting adventures. The difference is that every story has been carefully written to match a specific reading level, making it easier for children to enjoy reading independently.

Instead of simply practising English, young readers experience the joy of getting lost in a story.

Why Are the Books Organised by Colour?

If you've looked at the series, you've probably noticed that each book belongs to a colour band such as Turquoise, Purple, Gold, White or Lime.

These colours are part of the UK's Book Bands reading system, which is widely used in schools and libraries to help children choose books that match their reading ability.

It's important to remember that these colours do not represent a child's age.

Instead, they indicate the level of reading difficulty.

Two children of the same age may happily read books from different colour bands—and that's perfectly normal. Every child develops reading skills at their own pace.

The goal isn't to move through the levels as quickly as possible, but to help children become confident, enthusiastic readers.

What Does "Phonic Phase 6" Mean?

The first three reading levels are marked as Phonic Phase 6.

This refers to the UK's Systematic Synthetic Phonics programme, which teaches children how letters and sounds work together to form words.

Phase 6 is the final stage of this programme.

By this point, children are expected to:

  • read familiar words confidently;
  • recognise more complex spelling patterns;
  • read with increasing fluency;
  • develop stronger spelling skills.

The following levels—Beyond Phonic Phase 6—shift the focus away from decoding individual words and towards reading fluently, expanding vocabulary and developing a deeper understanding of stories.

Let's Explore the Reading Levels

Turquoise

32 pages

Approximately 750 words

Phonic Phase 6

Turquoise is an excellent starting point for children who are ready to move beyond very short reading books and begin reading simple stories independently.

The books feature colourful illustrations, short chapters and carefully controlled vocabulary that helps children build confidence without feeling overwhelmed.

Ideal for children who:

  • can already read simple texts;
  • are beginning to read independently;
  • need to build reading confidence.

Featured titles include:

Purple

32 pages

Approximately 1,000 words

Phonic Phase 6

At the Purple level, stories become slightly longer and characters become more developed.

Children begin following more detailed plots while continuing to strengthen their reading fluency.

This level is ideal for readers who already feel comfortable reading independently and are ready for a little more challenge.

Featured titles include:

Gold

32–48 pages

Approximately 1,250 words

Phonic Phase 6

Gold is the stage where many children begin reading not simply to practise English, but because they're genuinely eager to discover what happens next.

Stories become richer, vocabulary expands naturally, and plots grow more engaging.

Illustrations continue to support the text, but the reading experience increasingly focuses on the story itself.

Featured titles include:

 White

48 pages

Approximately 1,500 words

Beyond Phonic Phase 6

At this level, books begin to resemble children's first short novels.

Sentences become longer, vocabulary becomes richer and stories require stronger comprehension skills.

Perfect for confident young readers who are ready for longer adventures.

Featured titles include:

 Lime

48 pages

Approximately 1,750 words

Beyond Phonic Phase 6

Lime is the highest reading level within the Bloomsbury Young Readers series.

Stories become more sophisticated, featuring richer plots, stronger character development and more dialogue. These books provide an ideal bridge to longer children's novels in English.

Featured titles include:

Does Age Matter?

Yes—but not as much as reading ability.

Here's a general guide:

Reading Level Approximate Age*
Turquoise 5–7 years
Purple 6–8 years
Gold 6–8 years
White 7–9 years
Lime 7–10 years

These ages are only guidelines. Some children begin reading English earlier than others, while some need a little more time. A child's confidence and reading ability are always more important than their age.

How Do You Know If a Book Is the Right Level?

There isn't a perfect formula, but there are a few helpful signs.

A book is probably a good match if your child:

  • reads comfortably and enjoys the story;
  • understands what is happening without constant help;
  • encounters a few new words, but not on every line;
  • occasionally asks for support without becoming frustrated.

If your child struggles with too many unfamiliar words on every page, it's usually better to choose a lower reading level.

This isn't a step backwards—it's the best way to build confidence and create positive reading experiences that inspire children to keep reading.

Why We Love Bloomsbury Young Readers

At Librik, we believe that a lifelong love of reading doesn't begin with the longest book on the shelf—it begins with the first story a child can read independently.

That's exactly what makes Bloomsbury Young Readers so special.

Every book is carefully matched to a child's stage of reading development, helping them progress naturally and confidently while discovering the joy of reading in English.

To us, these are much more than graded readers.

They are the beginning of a lifelong reading journey—one story at a time.
